Friends of Santa Teresa Park Zoom Meeting, 12/4/25

    • This was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting link for this Zoom meeting.
    • Attendees: Mike Boulland, Ron Horii, David Huntley, Joan Murphy.
    • We are going to have a work day tomorrow 12/5 at 9:00 at the Bernal Ranch. Ron, Mike, David, and Joan will be coming. Kim can't come. Youngmee will be coming, but can't stay for lunch. Potential work items: repairing the garden boxes, cleaning out the drains, picking up leaves and brush.
    • Park Interpreter Katrina Semene sent an update:
      • Intern Jack is updating the display case in the ranch house. It will have more information about the Anza Expedition.
      • Jack and Katrina are creating a scavenger hunt activity and are working on deciding which artifacts to feature in the scavenger hunt.
      • They noticed water was coming into the barn during the last rain. She and Carolyn requested maintenance to redirect the water flow away from the building.
    • Ron showed pictures:
      • 11/7/25: work day at the ranch, swept leaves around the ranch house and the flagstone walkway, repaired the garden box hinge, painted some of the boxes, fixed the top screen of the butterfly box, pulled dead amaryllis, weeded the garden boxes.
      • 11/10/25: there was an awards ceremony at the Almaden Valley Community Association meeting. Lee Pauser was honored for his work with bird boxes in parks, including Santa Teresa. Steve Cassidy, who has been helping Lee with the bird boxes, was also honored. (Steve does tree planting in Santa Teresa Park.) Leisa Johnson, who is a County Parks volunteer and former staff member, was honored for her charity work providing food for the needy.
      • 11/14/25: hike started at the golf course, to Laurel Springs, Ridge Trail (eroded), Pueblo, Bernal Road.
      • 11/28/25: lots of plants growing in the planter boxes by the ranch house (can't tell which are weeds yet), corner of garden box cover needs repair, trenches dug around corner of barn to divert water, blackberries growing in drain above retaining wall and around the spring, some dirt around the spring, saw figure in the spring grotto, Pyzak House needs sweeping of the porch and driveway, coyote at the bottom of the Mine Hill/Norred Trail, trotted off into the Norred Ranch. Hiked the Norred Trail, looks good.
      • 12/1/25: Plastic on the canal to prevent erosion, broken gate at bottom of Bernal Road, canal is dry, Ohlone Trail looks OK, coast live oak trees at the Ohlone/Coyote Peak junction have brown leaves (sudden oak death?), erosion on connector trail behind driving range.
    • Ron will share concerns about sudden oak death with park staff.
    • There neeeds to be signs to recognize that volunteers that have adopted the chicken coop and garden boxes. Ranger Colby is working on it. Lee and Robin have adopted the garden boxes. Youngmee has adopted the butterfly box.
    • We talked about our work plan, which is due.
    • We talked about FOSTP adopting a spot, but we are already land stewards for the entire Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch, which means we can work anywhere in the ranch. Does it cover the Pyzak Ranch?
    • We'll have a luncheon after the work day. We'll order food from El Amigo, picking from a menu. Mike & Dorene will supply plastic utensils, plates, and tablecloths. Dorene will pick up the food at 11:30. It will be paid with the FOSTP debit card. Everybody will bring their own drinks. David can bring some water. Our grant will pay for the food if it's <$20/person. The selections will be $16 max to allow for tax and tip. Budgeted expenses are $260, assuming 13 participants. We have $256 in our event fund. We may need to move some over from another budget category, like newsletters, which has $208 left.
    • We have switched our bank account to US Bank so we don't have to maintain a minimum balance to avoid fees. There are branches on Almaden Expressway, Stevens Creek, and Foxworthy. Mike, David, and Ron will go to the Almaden branch to get them setup as signers on the account. Unrestricted funds ($527.33) have been moved over. The plan is to move the rest over. Checks have been ordered. We'll get them next week.
    • Beautify San Jose Grant: The application for the Cycle 8 grant was due November 12. The application procedure has changed. Instead of having to fill out the same form each year, applicants only have to fill it out once every 3 years. If they get their grant approved, for the following 2 years, they only have to fill out a much simpler RFQ form, which doesn't require justifications. Ron filled out the form, using the same budget items and descriptions. He submitted it before the deadline on 11/6/25 and got confirmation for the submission. Now we have to wait to hear if it got approved. We are on our third year of the cycle, so next year, we would have to submit a complete application again.
    • Treasurer's report (David): Our total budget is $1613.08. Unreimbursed expenses to Mike Boulland are $998.76. Our total assets are $1629.03. Total expenses are $720.45.
