- This
was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting
link for this Zoom meeting.
- Attendees: Mike
Boulland, Kim Gardner, Ron
Horii, David Huntley, Joan Murphy.
- We are going to have a work day tomorrow at 9:00 at the Bernal Ranch. 8 people are signed up for it. Joan can't come to it.
- There
are no signs to recognize that volunteers that have adopted the chicken
coop and garden boxes. Mike should bring that issue to the VCC.
- Katrina Semene sent an update:
- Katrina
is back as an Extra Help Interpreter for Region 2 under Carolyn Semene.
She is working on Sundays at the Bernal Ranch. Jack, who is an intern,
works there on Saturdays.
- The school program restarted on October 17 and will run until Early December. They will be on Fridays.
- The house and barns are open on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm and Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm.
- Terri Lopez was promoted to Interp/OREC Program Manager. (The previous manager, Kim Calame, retired.)
- Ron showed pictures:
- Ranger
Colby got a report that a neighbor spotted a piece of farm equipment in
the front yard of a nearby home and thought it might have come from the
line of farm equipment along the west barn. They noticed that one of
the pieces of equipment that used to be there was missing. Ron looked
into it and saw that a plow-like tool was there in 2022, but was
missing after that. Rob McDonnell said it had been moved into the barn.
Ron looked in the barn and saw it there. No other equipment appears to
have been moved.
- 10/3/25: we had a our First Friday work day.
Mike and Joan couldn't make it for healthy reasons. Ron signed people
in and gave directions. Robin, Lee, and Youngmee were there. They are
part of the Adopt-a-Spot crew that have adopted the garden boxes.
Anoosheh joined them. She is planting flowers in the boxes next to the
house. Maurice, who stopped by to talk to us last month when we were
working at the Pyzak House, came to help. We cleared blackberries from
around the drain and retaining wall above the street and around Santa
Teresa Spring.
- 10/12/25: Ron went for a hike to Coyote Peak and
saw willows planted in the pond along the Hidden Springs Trail. There
was a lot of traffic in the Coyote Valley going to the Spina Farms
Pumpkin Patch. The Holthouse Ranch, which can be seen from Coyote Peak
was recently purchased by POST. It adjoins a recent addition to Calero
County Park and is close to Santa Teresa Park. If the county buys it
from POST, it can potentially connect Calero with Santa Teresa.
- 10/23/25:
The Gulnac Trail needs trail signs at the entrances. Ron measured the
distance with an odometer app. Starting from the Santa Teresa Spring
entrance, it's 0.07 miles to the Manila Way entrance, 0.16 miles to the
Bear Tree monument, 0.19 miles to the Curie Drive entry path, 0.22
miles to the front of the Pyzak House, 0.25 miles to the start of the
Bonetti Ranch, 0.29 miles to the end of the trail at San Ignacio.
- 10/28/25: There are new plantings in the Pueblo Area between the corral and the restrooms.
- 11/3/25:
There was graffiti on the bench on the lookout at the end of the spur
trail off the Mine Trail between the Fortini and Stile Ranch trails.
Ron removed the graffiti.
- 11/4/25: Ron scouted areas for
Friday's work day around the Bernal Ranch House, the drain, Santa
Teresa Spring, and the Pyzak Ranch. There are plants growing in the
flower boxes by the ranch house. There are some blackberries growing
back here and there, but nothing looks too bad. We could continue
cleaning the driveway at the Pyzak Ranch. Olives have fallen on the
driveway.
- One of the garden boxes needs to have its corner
reinforced. Mike has an L-bracket for that. Another box has it's cover
torn off from its hinges. The wood in the cover rotted out, and the
screws came. David thinks it can be fixed by reinforcing the screw
holes with wood putty. They will look at the garden boxes at the work
day.
- Two of the pieces of farm equipment along the
retaining wall between the barn are dump rakes, used for raking up hay.
The one on the right has tines sticking out that could stab someone.
Ron reported it. Ranger Colby fixed it by flipping over a lever
that moves the tines to the back, where they don't stick out.
- Treasurer's report (David): We have $1770.53 in our account. After known unsubmitted expenses, the remaining balance is $123.
- We need to keep at least $500 in our Wells Fargo checking account to avoid a $10 monthly fee.
Mike and David will go to Wells Fargo and see if they will waive the
fee. If not, David has looked into banks that have free checking with
no minimum balance requirements.
- Beautify San
Jose Grant: The application for the Cycle 8 grant is due November 12.
The application procedure has changed. Instead of having to fill out
the same form each year, applicants only have to fill it out once. If
they get their grant approved, for the following 2 years, they only
have to fill out a much simpler RFQ form, which doesn't require
justifications. Ron will fill out the form this year, using the same
budget items and descriptions.
