- This
was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting
link for this Zoom meeting.
- Attendees: Mike
Boulland, Kim Gardner, Ron
Horii, David Huntley. New is Anoosheh Niavarani.
- We'll
have our next FOSTP First Friday workday tomorrow, 10/3. It will be a
small group. It hasn't been announced on Samaritan. Mike is recovering
from COVID and won't be able to make it. Joan is traveling. David can't
make it. Ron will be there. Alex from maintenance won't be there.
- Mike wants to have a recognition picnic later this year.
- Lee,
Robin, Youngmee, and Anoosheh have adopted the garden boxes at the
Bernal Ranch in the Adopt-a-Spot program. They weed the boxes and have
planted them with vegetables. Anoosheh got permission to plant flowers
in the planter boxes by the ranch house. One of the boxes needs fixing.
Mike has a bracket to fix it.
- Ron finished editing the 2025 newsletter. It's 6 pages in color. He also made a 1-page flyer, also in color, that has a QR link to the newsletter and links to our website and all the newsletters.
- David
had the newsletter and flyer printed at Office Depot. He got 20 color
copies and 20 black-and-white copies of the newsletter, 30 color and 30
black-and-white copies of the flyer, and 3 color and 10 black-and-white
copies of the membership trifold. The total cost, which included a
discount, was $89.64. Many were given out during La Fuente. David will
count how many are left over.
- The full color newsletters
can be handed out to park and other officials, the County Parks
Commission, and the Board of Supervisors. The 1-page flyers can be left
at the Bernal Ranch House, libraries, the Casa Grande, coffee shops.
- Senior
Ranger Colby Meenk expressed concerns about the condition of Bernal
Road leading into the park. IBM is responsible for maintenance, since
the road provides access to their Almaden Research Center. He'd like to
see them fix up the road now. What's going to happen if IBM sells its
lab? Who is going to be responsible for maintenance? Which jurisdiction
is the road in, city or county?
- This year, starting in October through June 2026, is the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Anza Expedition. We may be able to do something for that.
- Ron showed a slideshow:
- 9/5/25: FOSTP First Friday cleanup at the Pyzak Ranch (Facebook album). Anoosheh came to this and helped with the cleanup.
- 9/20/25: La Fuente (3 Facebook albums): La Fuente Event, FOSTP at La Fuente, Chris Horii's pictures of La Fuente.
- 9/29/25:
Communication boxes installed on the Bernal Ranch buildings, cable
being strung along the street. New enclosure around the A/C unit, made
from painted wooden pallets. Vegetables in garden boxes. Poison oak in
garden in front of house. Blackberries growing all over the ranch and
around the spring. Potential cleanup at the Pyzak Ranch. Conditions on
Bernal Road. Cloud and trail pictures from the Joice, Bernal Hill,
Mine, and Norred Trails.
- La Fuente was held on 9/20/25.
- We
had a planning meeting on 8/22/25 at Mike's house. Mike was going on a
trip, so he couldn't come to La Fuente. He brought supplies for it
before our work day on 9/5. We stored them in the middle of the
east barn.
- Our booth was in the barnyard in front of the east
barn, along the fence, facing east. We moved to the north end of the
fence, where the ground is flatter. The Parks Department provided 2
canopies, 3 tables, and chairs. Their A/V trailer was parked behind us
and provided shade, so we didn't need to put up shadecloths in the back
of our booth.
- Ron, David, Kim, Joan, Joan's sister Carole, and
Lee came to setup the booth and games. David, Kim, Joan, and Lee manned
the booth. Ron brought posters and easels. David brought the
newsletters, flyers, and trifolds. Kim brought candy and pumpkins. The
candy was given out as prizes for the games. The pumpkins were
decorations. The large pumpkins were raffle prizes. Carole brought
pizza for the volunteers. David and Joan read off the raffle numbers
and gave away the pumpkins.
- We had the cornhole game, but not
the sponge toss this year. The cornhole game was popular. We also had a
game for guessing how many coins were in a jar (play money simulating
Changara's Treasure). There was another game for counting number of
bears in a picture.
- Newsletters, flyers, and trifolds were passed out during La Fuente. Full newsletters in color are
reserved for VIPs. One was given to County Parks Director Todd Lofgren
during La Fuente. He came to the FOSTP booth.
- Ron took pictures of the event, including FOSTP's participation. Ron's son Chris also came to take pictures. (See above.)
- Youngmee
and Robin helped with the cleanup. We put the supplies back in the east
barn. Mike will pick them up after he gets back from his trip.
- Treasurer's report by David:
- Our
total assets are $1965.28. Expenses to be reimbursed: $89.64 to David
for printing, $86.55 to Kim for La Fuente booth supplies and pumpkins,
$18.56 to Ron for a card holder and clips. Mike spent $118.86 for web
hosting, $159.90 for Zoom, $20 for the California SI-100 form, $100 to
make sure we have a $500 balance in our account, and $600 for CA late
filing penalty, for a total of $998.76.
- We need
to keep at least $500 in our Wells Fargo checking account to avoid a
$10 monthly fee. David looked at alternative checking accounts that
have no minimum balance requirements to avoid fees. He looked at US
Bank and Citizens Bank. Mike said he needs to visit Wells Fargo and
will talk to them about the fees. Checks need to have 2 signatures.
Since we already have printed checks, we need to consider check
printing costs.
