- This
was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting
link for this Zoom meeting.
- Attendees: Mike
Boulland, Ron
Horii, Kim Gardner, Joan Murphy, Maurice Bayani
- Maurice has been to our First Friday Workdays. He lives next to Bernal School..
- We
had a First Friday Workday on 4/3/26. Our plan was to get free mushroom
compost from Monterey Mushrooms for the garden boxes. Mike went there
early in the morning with his truck to get some, but found out they
were no longer giving out free compost. Instead, Mike went to Lowes and
bought bags of garden soil. We spread the soil in the garden, pulled and scraped off grass and weeds, and cleared dead leaves.
- We
had a work day last Friday May 1 at 9:00 at the Bernal
Ranch. We painted and repaired the garden boxes. The garden crew planted vegetables in them. Carolyn
Schimandle donated 4 tomato plants. We cleared backberries from the
drain and retaining wall. We worked on the irrigation system. We sorted the sprinkler parts that were stored in the barn.
- Next month, we can sand and paint some of the benches by the cabinets by the ranch house.
- Ron showed pictures (from Facebook):
- Our
"Mothers and Flowers" hike will be on May 9, 2026 from 9-12 at the
Stile Ranch entrance. Mike
and Ron will be leading it. We need speakers to portray historical
characters. Joan will portrary Maria Zacarias Bernal de Berreyesa.
Dorene will play Clementine Fortini. Mike will be Jose Reyes de los
Berreyesa. Ron will be pointing out wildflowers. The hike will follow
the Fortini, Mine, and Stile Ranch Trails. Meet at the trailhead at
8:00 am. Kim can't make it this year. Last year, she played Jesusita Bernal.
- We're using Quickbooks online, but it's expensive to renew the subscription. It's cheaper and better for 501c3 non-profits.
- David submitted the treasurer's report.
- We submitted our Beautify SJ Cycle 7 final report.
- For
Beautify SJ Cycle 8, $890 will be released in May. To get the
rest, we have to provide a letter of approval from the County Park for
our projects.
- Art Boudreault's widow Diana Sanborn gave
$10K to Mike to manage as a donation. $8K is reserved restoring the New
Almaden Ting if and when the project is approved. If it's not approved,
Mike can use the money for FOSTP.
- With the donation, we have $10,329.54 in our account.
- Mike spent $30.80 on garden soil and $44 for the 6 month rental of our PO box.
- David
and Mike are working on our workplan, which needs to be signed off by
the parks department. Mike wants to adopt Santa Teresa Spring and the
Pyzak House.
- We can use $600 for our 501(c)(3) non-profit
application. (The Beautify SJ Grant will not pay for it.) Mike will ask
his friend to review our application.
- At the April 1 Parks Commission meeting,
there was a presentation about "Mountain Bikes Amenities Feasibility
Study." (See pages 23-80.) They studied adding features to the county
parks: pump tracks/skill areas and MTB only downhill trails. Pump
Track/Skill Area: "bike park amenities that feature loops and obstacles
of different difficulty levels for all ages to use." Downhill Trails:
"dedicated MTB trail using the natural terrain for technical
experiences." They studied the feasibility of implementing them in
different parks. Santa Teresa was rated "very likely" for a pump
track/skill area and "likely" for downhill trails. (Ed Levin and JD
Grant were rated very likely for downhill trails.) "Very likely" means
"The park meets majority of the criteria and has near-term
opportunities for additional trails or amenities." "Likely" means "The
park meets most of the criteria but has limited opportunities for
additional trails or amenities." A survey of mountain bikers about
location priorities showed Santa Teresa ranked #3 for pump tracks/skill
parks and #1 for downhill trails. The report recommended pump
tracks/skill areas at Coyote Lake, Grant, and Sanborn. It recommended
downhill trails at Ed Levin and Grant.
- We talked about designating some trails as "bike only" on certain days, but that would be tricky to implement.
- The
chickens at the Bernal Ranch will be moved to an animal sanctuary. The
staff doesn't have time to give them proper care, and volunteers can't
be there all the time.
- We talked about being held responsible
for signs we put up in the parks, like our sign on Coyote Peak, for 30
years. Some of us will be over 100 by then.
