Friends of Santa Teresa Park Zoom Meeting, 5/1/25

    • This was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting link for this Zoom meeting.
    • Attendees: Mike Boulland, Ron Horii, David Huntley, Joan Murphy, Katrina Semene
    • Our April 3 meeting was cut short when Mike lost his Internet connection.
    • With the County Parks' budget situation, some job codes will be eliminated.
    • Katrina is on provisional status as an interpreter until Rob's job code gets filled.
    • Todd Loffgren becomes the new director of the County Parks, starting 5/12. He was the deputy director for Portland parks.
    • We will have a First Friday Work Day this Friday. Alex Ale will not be there.
    • Mike will be getting a medical procedure on June 4 and will need several weeks to recover. No meeting on June 5. We will have a work day on June 6. Ron will lead.
    • David Huntley has been elected our new treasurer. Treasurer's report: we have $463.93 in our checking account. David is on Quickbooks online. He has access to our bank account. He scrubbed our account data for 2024. We need to send filings to the state.
    • We're running at a temporary deficit. We haven't received our Beautify SJ Cycle 7 Grant funds yet. We spent $1750 last year. Should we look for other sources of income, like a raffle? We would need a raffle permit and a venue to hold a raffle. We are not allowed to do fundraising at La Fuente. Ron donated $68.07 by foregoing a reimbursement for an expense. Mike donated $500. We paid $200 for UNSCC membership last year. This year, we paid for membership on Jan. 2. We paid for Zoom on 2/8/25 and Turbify (website hosting) on 3/8/25. Cycle 7 has moved to a fiscal year. It starts in April. Cycle 6 ended in December 2024. What about the expenses from January to April? Mike will talk to the grant people about this "donut hole." The mayor needs to approve the budget before the grant money can be released.
    • We sent in the final report for the Beautify SJ Cycle 6 Grant.
    • The cabinets in the yard of the Bernal Ranch House may be taken out. They were used to store wash basins for the wash days, which are no longer being held.
    • Park Interpreter Jan Shriner is retiring in 2-3 weeks. Katrina doesn't know if they will hire to fill her position.
    • May 10 is our Mothers and Flowers Hike. We need volunteers to portray historic figures. Lynette Tran might be able to be Sam the Cook's wife from New Alamden. Kim will be Jesusita Bernal. Dorene may be Clementine Fortini. Joan will be Maria Zacarias Bernal de Berreyesa. Mike knows someone who lived in the Fortini area and may be able to talk. Mike will not be able to lead the hike. Ron will lead it and talk about wildflowers.
    • Mike wanted to know if we could see the "Doors House."
    • Vanessa Clayton is the acting Senior Ranger for the Hellyer-Santa Teresa unit.
    • We won't have a work day on July 4.
    • Carolyn Schimandle is planning La Fuente. She will be meeting with staff to discuss it on 5/9. There are budget constraints. They have to avoid scheduling it near Mexican Independence Day, which is 9/15/-16, when entertainers and speakers will be unavailable.
    • A new intern will be coming next week and will be helping with school programs and staffing the ranch house on Sundays. She is a recent SJSU grad.
    • 26 kindergarten students from Los Paseos School will be coming tomorrow. Katrina will be there at 8:30.
    • There will be a volunteer event coming up to clean out the chicken coop. They will need 4-5 volunteers.
    • The garden boxes have irrigation, but it may need to be repaired.
    • Ron showed pictures:
      • 4/5/25: First Friday Work Day. We pulled weeds in and around the garden boxes, scraped and painted part of 1 box, cut weeds at the entrance and along the Caretakers' House fence.
      • 4/11/25: Pictures of Ron's hike on the Rocky Ridge Trail. Lots of wildflowers were blooming.
      • 4/16/25: Flowers and views on the hike to Coyote Peak. PG&E was doing maintenance on their towers, with a helicopter carrying workers suspended on a cable.
      • 4/17/25: Brush rabbit on the Mine Trail.
      • 4/28/25: Potential work areas around the ranch house, the drain above the wall, the picnic area, condition of the garden boxes, cabinets, and benches, weeds and mud at the spring.
