Friends of Santa Teresa Park Zoom Meeting, 2/5/26

    • This was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting link for this Zoom meeting.
    • Attendees: Mike Boulland, Ron Horii, David Huntley, Joan Murphy.
    • We are going to have a work day tomorrow 2/6/26 at 9:00 at the Bernal Ranch.
    • There was a Parks & Recreation Commission meeting on 2/4/26. It was on Zoom. (This is the agendaThis is the agenda packet.)
      • They talked about the Fortini Site Plan, which addresses the development of the property along Fortini Road to connect Calero with Santa Teresa. The plan was presented to the Parks Commission in October. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) analysis and determination was released for public comment on January 7, 2026. Later, it will be presented to the Housing, Land Use, Environment, and Transportation Committee after responding to public comments.
      • Santa Teresa Grazing Plan Implementation: $3,000,000 was recommended to fund construction of new water and fencing infrastructure to implement the Santa Teresa Grazing Management Plan.
      • The Unused Structures Inventory Project Report was presented. There are recommendations for which properties are historically significant and worth saving and which are not and should be left alone or removed. It evaluated several structures in Santa Teresa Park: the Door House, the Fortini Ranch, the Jacoba Bernal Fisher/Pyzak House, and the Bernal-Johnson-Norred Ranch, totalling 13 historic properties.
    • Ron showed pictures:
      • 11/4/25 for comparison: east wall of the Pyzak House broken into, with graffiti. It's been like this for months. Fallen palm branches on the yard.
      • 12/5/25 FOSTP First Friday work day (FFWD). Cut a drainage channel near the start of the Joice Trail to steer water away from the barn. Repaired a garden box lid. Weeded the garden boxes. Cleared the drain above the retaining wall. Removed blackberries from below the spring. Had lunch from El Amigofor volunteers.
      • 12/21/25: The hole in the wall of the Pyzak House has been patched with plywood, some graffiti still there. Palm fronds have been cleaned up.
      • 12/26/25: saw coyote in the Pueblo Area.
      • 1/6/26: waterfall in upper Laurel Canyon.
      • 1/29/26: County Parks volunteers potluck dinner at the HQs.
      • 1/30/26: conditions at the Bernal Ranch, Santa Teresa Spring, and the Pyzak House, potential work areas.
      • 1/31/26: hike on the Stile Ranch, Mine, and Fortini trails. Trails were dry and in good shape. Graffiti on the leg of the bench overlooking the Fortini Trail.
    • Ron found an old photo album with prints of the Santa Teresa Community Fest in George Page Park on 9/22/01 and the fire in Santa Teresa Park on 10/1/01. He scanned the pictures and put them in Facebook albums.
    • Ron submitted the proposal form for our "Mothers and Flowers" hike on the Fortini/Mine/Stile Ranch trails on May 9, the day before Mother's Day. It was accepted for consideration.
    • Carrie Grisenti, who was in charge of the outdoor recreation program, retired last October. Her position is currently vacant.
    • Treasurer's report (David): Our money has been moved to US Bank. No minimum balance is required. We need to keep $100 for filing forms. All 2025 expenses have been reimbursed or classified as donations.
    • We have 7 weeks left in our Beautify San Jose Cycle 7 grant. We haven't heard yet if we are going to get our Cycle 8 grant, but we have been put on the list of approved providers, so we are eligible for the grant.
    • We have $230 in our Cycle 7 grant left for publications + events. If we don't spend it by 3/31/26, we have to give it back. We could have a cleanup event at the Pyzak Ranch and provide food. (We spent $150.95 at El Amigo for our last 12/5 FFWD.) We could bring food, like pizza, to our future FFWD events. We could buy more ink.
    • We still have copies of newsletters, so we don't need to print more. Some can be brought to the Bernal Ranch and see if they can be left in the ranch house for visitors to pick up. They can be passed to out new volunteers at our FFWD.
    • We talked about filing for 501(c)(3) status. David said it makes us eligible for discounts for some things, like Quickbooks. Ron said to wait at least until we know if get our Cycle 8 grant. If we do, we don't need more money, and we may not be eligible for future grants as a neighborhood organization if we have 501(c)(3) status. It may make us eligible only for specific beautification projects, and not for organizational expenses, like our website and Zoom. If we don't get the grant, then becoming a 501(c)(3) will allow us to ask for donations and other grants, where it helps or is required to have 501(c)(3) status. Note that we may need to get directors and officers (D&O) liability insurance, which can be expensive. NAQCPA has it.
