Park report (John Patterson):
-
The Bear Tree Lot will have a walk-through in the fence. The Pyzak house
will be a park residence. A maintenance person will be staying there. It
will be a private residence, so it needs to be secured. There will be a
fence put up at the right side of the driveway to distinguish the Bear
Tree Lot from the residence.
-
They're looking at making a rock swale at the muddy bend in the Mine Trail
by the old corral, near the Rocky Ridge Trail junction.
-
They will be putting in a rock swale at the creek crossing on the Fortini
Trail. Fish & Game doesn't like culverts.
-
They will be losing 3 maintenance people who were working at Santa Teresa.
There will only 2 left, covering Santa Teresa, Calero, and Almaden Quicksilver.
They will try to keep the trails open and keep the culverts clear. Volunteer
trail crews can help. They can check the culverts.
-
On the PGE easements: people can walk on them. It is PGE's responsibility
to maintain them.
-
Someone is living in a truck at the Pyzak Ranch. He's been parked there
at least a week on the street side.
-
Deer have been coming out into the neighborhood at De Sault. There is no
deer crossing sign. This is a city issue.
-
Cross-country teams have not been running at Santa Teresa. They don't like
the soil because of safety issues. The hard ground has cracks, and the
ground stays wet and unrunnable in the rainy season. Teams have been going
to Alum Rock, but it is getting over-crowded.
-
The old barn will be restored. It will be used as a real barn. The 4H can
have larger animals there.
-
Mike would like to see a small office area in the old barn after it's restored.
We need a community room. One possibility is to clear out the tools from
the new barn.
-
They are trying to get rid of the trees over the Buck Norred house. They
cleared out the bees. There is asbestos insulation inside. No one can go
in until that's taken care of. Historic Heritage re-evaluated the house
and said it is not historically valuable.
-
Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch activities
-
John Dorrance had a moon viewing night and ghost night at the ranch. 30-40
people came. They had to turn people away.
-
John wants to have a Zorro night. No date yet.
-
John is getting about 2 classrooms tours per week.
-
Mike will lead a class at the ranch. Glider Elementary will walk to the
ranch.
They will see displays and the springs.
-
John wants to have a Christmas program at the ranch, with caroling. He
can show a movie. A volunteer may read from a Dickens Tale.
-
John wants to rebuild an old 1890's wagon that he picked up. A friend of
his donated it to the park. It has wooden wheels. The Boy Scouts can help
put it together. They can attach it behind a truck and give wagon rides.
-
There is a virtual tour of the Joice-Bernal House on the park website.
John Fialkowski did it.
-
Rick Leonard is doing stargazing interpretive programs.
-
Mike wants to help build a fence behind the caretaker's house.
-
John met with paranormal investigators who came by the ranch house and
found ghosts in the house.
-
They want to do a haunted hike every few months.
-
The fire marshall will not allow meetings in the barn. They need a sprinkler
system in the barn to use it for meetings.
-
Wash days will return in the spring.
-
Someone comes to the Bernal Road entrance to the park and pick up trash
along Bernal each morning around 8 am.
-
Park permit: Mike is working with the park's department on this. We want
to make sure that our activities in the park are covered by the park department's
insurance.
-
Mark Frederick said that the following areas are closed to the public:
the Bonetti Ranch, Buck Norred's, the Bear Tree Lot, the Pyzak Ranch. (Buck
Norred's is not an official entrance.)
-

-
The Board of Supervisors are meeting on 11/25, but they may not talk about
