Friends of Santa Teresa Park Meeting Summary for 8/5/04

  • Meeting attendees:
    • Mike Boulland, Ronald Horii, Kitty Monahan, Ken Silveira, Mario Blaum, Julie Gaffney, Hazen Anderson
  • Ron read the minutes.
  • Ranger report: Ken Silveira, Julie Gaffney
    • The contractor is ready to go forwards with installing the fence around the canal west of the Buck Norred site. They will be starting on August 23.
    • We talked about the issue of dogs (as well as bikes and horses) being restricted from the BGJ Ranch historical area. There are 6-7 signs in the area talking about the restrictions. They mainly don't want dogs around the house. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but it's not clear how to get there.
    • There have been some large parties at Santa Teresa Springs that the rangers have broken up.
    • The ranges caught some paintballers in the park.
    • They got a medical call about a bicyclist who had a seizure above the BGJ Ranch.
    • There are 3 signs along the Mine Trail that point to the exit at Heaton Moor Drive, even though that is not an official entrance. Julie said that people using the trail don't realize that. They've been telling the trail users to come in from Bernal along the canal. (Note that a trail is being planned to provide an official trailhead to the Mine Trail. It will start near the Pyzak Ranch site.)
  • John Dorrance will be getting a $170 grant for a native plant garden around the BGJ ranch house. 4H gardeners will take care of them.
  • We had a question on the status of the Johnson House at the Buck Norred site: is it on the historic inventory? Ask Dana Peak of Historic Heritage.
  • There is no more Silicon Valley Parks Foundation. Donations to Santa Teresa Park will have to go through FOSTP.
  • How to organize Park Watch? There is no system organized for it now. People do it on their own now. Start with the volunteer program. Make it part of Trail Watch.
  • October 16: tentative data for Ron to do a slideshow presentation at the Ranch. Check with John Dorrance. Bring popcorn.
  • Every day around 8 am, there's a person who picks up garbage on Bernal Road. We should thank him.
  • We need to identify where the barbed wire is in the park. Need to know where to pull it out.
  • Some bicyclist put a bridge over the creek on the Fortini Trail.
  • Maintenance asked us to pick up trash across from Bernal School. We need to talk to the principal at Bernal.
  • A new parking pass replaces the old pass for volunteer activities. It is intended only for volunteer activitities. (It does not replace the free parking passes given out as volunteer awards.)
  • We talked about the steep paved trail section at the start of the Mine Trail. Hikers and equestrians have been complaining that this is slippery and dangerous in wet weather. The new Mine Trail route could bypass this section. We want to review the routing of the new trail.
