Friends of Santa Teresa Park Zoom Meeting, 6/6/24

    • This was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting link for this Zoom meeting.
    • Attendees: Mike Boulland, Ron Horii
    • This was a short meeting. Because of problems sending out the correct Zoom address, the meeting started late, and people couldn't sign on. Only Mike and Ron were on.
    • Ron had prepared a slideshow:
      • 5/3/24: First Friday workday. We cut weeds around the barn, weeded the garden boxes, scraped off grass in front of the ranch house, cut blackberries in the drain above the retaining wall, cleared mud and weeds from around Santa Teresa Spring, cut weeds below the spring.
      • 5/9/24: Somebody mowed a winding path in the field below the spring that looked like a snake. It turned brown from the cut grass. When Park Maintenance mowed the rest of the field, the cut "Snake Trail" turned green. [Later, a neighbor across the street admitted he mowed the trail so his kids could play on it. The Parks' Natural Resources people talked to him about it and warned him not to do it again.]
      • 5/11/24:  We had our "Mothers and Flowers" hike on the Fortini, Mine, and Stile Ranch Trails. About 18 people showed up. Mike and Ron led the hike. Joan, Dorene, and Kim portrayed historic mothers from Santa Teresa's history. Ron talked about wildflowers. Mike talked about the area's history.
      • 5/13/24: The bench at the end of the spur trail off the Mine Trail was covered with graffiti. The bench is one of the destinations of the "Hike the Hundred" challenge. The challenge requires people to take pictures of the bench, which would be embarrassing  Ron cleaned off the graffiti as best he could, though the texture of the bench made it hard to get everything off.
      • 5/15/24: A visitor got hooked by a large fishing hook while walking off the canal trail by the spring. Ron reported it to the rangers.
      • 5/23/24: Poison hemlock, thistles, and wild mustard have been growing over head high on the Mine and Norred Trails.
      • 6/3/24: Work possibilities at the Bernal Ranch: weeds around the garden boxes, weeds in the culvert by the Caretaker's House, grass growing in the mulch by the picnic area near the west barn, weeds growing around the farm equipment, grass and blackberries growing in the drain above the retaining wall along Manila Drive, blackberries growing along the ramp to the spring, mud and plants around Santa Teresa Spring,
      • 6/4/24: Lots of wildflowers are still growing on Bernal Hill, particularly the clarkia.
    • We will have a First Friday workday on June 7 at the Bernal Ranch starting at 9 am. Mike won't be able to make it. Ron will be there.
    • Mike is going on vacation 6/29 to 7/12.
    • We were awarded the Beautify San Jose Grant, but we haven't gotten the check yet.
    • No meeting on July 4, but we will have a First Friday work day on July 5.
    • We have our field trip to the Black Diamond Mines on July 14. We can get a special tour of Port Chicago.
