- This
was an online Zoom videoconference meeting. Mike sent out a meeting
link for this Zoom meeting.
- Attendees: Mike
Boulland, Ron
Horii, Joan Murphy. We had a late start, and some people may not have been able to sign in because of Zoom problems.
- Tomorrow,
Friday 3/7/25, we will have our First Friday Work Day at the Bernal
Ranch, starting at 9:00 am, meeting at the chicken coop. The next date
after that is 4/4/25.
- Staff report from Carolyn Schimandle:
Katrina Semene is filling in temporarily as the Park Interpreter at the
Bernal Ranch on Saturday and Sunday. She will also cover school
programming during the week. The Bernal House and barns will not be
open on Fridays.
- Treasurer's report: $483.93 balance, $0 in
outstanding check, Mike contributed $500 to provide a cushion until the
grant funds arrive in April.
- Beautify San Jose Grant Cycle 7:
Our grant application ($1500) has been approved, all required papers
and documents have been submitted. Release of funds is waiting for the
City Council.
- Election of officers: Current officers were re-elected.
- Ron was not able to show the meeting minutes from February's meeting because Zoom sharing wasn't working. Here are the minutes.
- Ron was not able to show a slideshow either because Zoom sharing wasn't working, so he described the pictures:
- 2/7/25: First Friday Cleanup Day at the Bernal Ranch.
Alex Ale was there from Maintenance to give directions. 9 people showed
up. Some were veterans. Some were new. They raked up leaves in the
yard, pulled weeds in the garden boxes, cut grass around the fences and
signposts, and pulled oxalis from around the valley oak tree.
- 2/13/25:
There was enough heavy rain that the waterfall in upper Laurel Canyon
was visible. Water was pouring down the culvert and Bernal Road and
flowing in the Coyote-Alamitos Canal. Water was flowing down the hills
and through the creek in the Pueblo Area, watering the sycamore trees. Here are pictures of Facebook.
- 2/16/25: Camp host at the Norred Ranch.
- 2/21/25:
Grass is growing all around the Bernal Ranch: around the the farm
equipment, the barn, and walkways. There's blackberries, bee plants,
and seep monkeyflowers growing around the spring. Dirt has collected
around the base of the spring, but is not too bad yet. Grass has been
cut along the margins of the Gulnac Trail. Privets are growing around
the Pyzak House and should be cut down.
- 2/23/25: Roxanne
Koopman had a birthday hike up Bernal Hill to the lookout bench that
the Koopmans donated. Afterwards, they had a picnic lunch and birthday
cake in the picnic area of the Bernal Ranch. About 80 people were
there, including District 10 Councipmember George Casey, who grew up in
the Santa Teresa Area.
- 3/1/25: Rob McDonnell was at the ranch.
He was minding the ranch for the day and was letting the chickens free
range around the ranch house. Potential areas for cleanup around the
ranch: Cut grass around the retaining wall, fence, and signposts at the
parking lot. Pull grass in the bark by the garden boxes. Continue
pulling the oxalis around the valley oak tree. Weed whack the yard
around the Caretaker's House.
- 3/1/25: Stile Ranch Trail hike. Poppies, shooting stars, turkey peas, lomatium, black sage, popcornflowers are starting to bloom.
- Events:
- Stan's Meetup Group will come help us at the FFF workday on May 2. June 6 will be next FFF date after that.
- Our July 4 FFF is canceled because of the holiday. Do we want to do a FFF picnic at one of the work days?
- 5/10/25:
our Mother's and Flowers hike on the Fortini-Mine-Stile Ranch trails.
We'll give 2-minute talks along the way with volunteers portraying
historical figures. Ron will point out wildflowers that are blooming at
the time.
- July 4 booth at Almaden Lake for the fireworks
show: we need volunteers to setup, staff, and take down the booth.
We need to see if NAQCPA wants to share a booth.
- Mile will give a whoppers tour in New Almaden on 10/26, starting at the Casa Grande.
- Mike will give another whoppers tour at the Bernal Ranch on 11/9 to Stan's Meetup group.
- Ron may do a fall photo class in the barn. (Spring is too busy.)
