  • Here are pictures of the Fantasy of Lights at Vasona.
  • 11/18/06, Founders Day Fandango at Santa Teresa County Park’s Historic Bernal Ranch 11:00am – 3:00 pm. Celebrate the 230th anniversary of the founding of San Jose with a rancho-style fandango.  Members of the Anza Expedition settled both the City of San Jose and the Bernal Rancho.  Join us for a celebration of dancing and demonstrations with hands on activities for all ages to commemorate our founders’ contributions to the history of our area and the vibrancy of our community.  Also visit History San Jose’s Peralta Adobe on Sunday the 19th as this weekend celebration continues!  Call (408) 846-5632 for more information. (See here for the flyer.) There will be professional performers coming in authentic costumes. There will be dancing, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. The public, staff, and volunteers are asked not to come in costume. Volunteers are needed to help run games, cook food, and help with parking.

  • 8/5/06: Dog Days of Summer at Santa Teresa County Park 10am-12pm – Take a leisurely stroll with your canine companion and a Park Ranger to learn about dog-friendly opportunities in County Parks.   • County Parks Linksters: Beginning Golf for Kids Ages 3 to 9, Santa Teresa Golf Club, 260 Bernal Road, San Jose. A six-week program . Saturdays, July 29 through September 2, 1:00-2:00 pm, adults must remain with child to provide support and assistance, lunch provided in club dining room. Cost per class: $10.   • 7/12/06: Mike Boulland and Art Bouldreault had a book signing and presentation of their book on New Almaden. It was held at the Casa Grande in New Almaden. They are having another session at the Almaden Community Center 6455 Camden Avenue, San Jose, on Jul 27, 2006 at 12:30 pm, in conjunction with the Almaden Community Center Senior Lunch Program.

  • Outdoor Photography Class and Wildflower Walk: 10 am-12 noon, Saturday, April 22, 2006 in the “Barn" at Santa Teresa's Historic Bernal Ranch, Manila Drive and Camino Verde, San Jose. Spring is wildflower time and a great time to grab your camera and go outside and take pictures! Docent Ron Horii will teach you almost all you need to know about taking inspiring outdoor pictures.  Class will include indoors instruction, an easy-going short walk around the Bernal Ranch, and a moderate hike into the hills to view and photograph the magnificent wildflowers. Wear comfortable shoes; bring a hat, bottled water, and your camera (optional). Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department Outdoor Recreation Program.   • Pigs have been invading the neighborhood between the Buck Norred Ranch and the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch. See here for a new page with pictures of the pig damage and links to more information. City councilman Forrest Williams and Supervisor Don Gage called a community meeting to discuss the pig problem. It will be held in the Southside Community Center at Poughkeepsie and Cottle Road on Monday, Nov. 28 at 6 pm.
  • Garnetta Annable is chairperson for the Yes on Parks Committee, which wants to put the renewal of the County Park Charter on the ballot for next June. She sent out an information sheet and petition form
  • October 29, 2005: Santa Teresa’s Historic Bernal Ranch: Monster Movie Night 7-10pm – Listen to ghostly tales inspired by park history, followed by a classic monster movie in the old barn. Ages 10+. Call (408) 226-5453 for reservations & information. 
  • There was a meeting on the new trail and accessibility from the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch to the Buck Norred Ranch Area, Wednesday October 19, 2005, 6:30 pm, Santa Teresa Golf Course Upper Banquet Facility. (See here for the meeting notice and summary.)

  • October 1, 2005: Santa Teresa's Historic Bernal Ranch:  Tarantula Night 7-10pm -  If you love eating popcorn, drinking lemonade and watching campy horror flicks, join us for "Tarantula" in the old barn.  A spider expert from the Tarantula Ranch is bringing many of his eight-legged friends for you to meet...pet one if you dare!  Call (408) 226-5453 for reservations and information.
  • Santa Teresa's Historic Bernal Ranch:  Outdoor Photography, Sept. 17, 9:30am-12pm  - Join Docent Ron Horii for a free photography workshop. You will learn how to take outdoor pictures, types of camera and film to use, photo composition, how to process digital pictures and how to design webpages and put your pictures on the web!  Bring your own camera - any kind will do!  Open to ages 14 and up - limit 20 participants.  Persons under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.  Participants should meet at the barn.  To sign up call (408) 268-6541 or (408) 355-2200.   • The parks department has scouted out a preliminary route for the trail between the Joice Trail above the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch to the Mine Trail south of the Buck Norred Ranch site. Here is a map.
  • 5/7 and 5/8/05: 9am - 1 pm, Trail Day at the Rocky Ridge Trail, meet at the corral parking lot. Tools, gloves, water, and snacks will be provided. Call the Volunteer Coordinator at (408) 355-2254 or the Trails Program at (408) 629-9347 for details.

  • Saturday, September 11: Santa Teresa:  Day Hike Survival Basics- Leaving the Kitchen Sink Behind 10am- 12 – Ever feel like a simple day hike requires too much effort?  Discover why you don’t need to bring everything including the kitchen sink.   Join a Park Ranger at the Pueblo Group Area to learn what it takes to have a safe, fun-filled day on the trails.  Call (408) 225-0225 for reservations & information. 
  • Saturday 8/28: Santa Teresa:  Calling All Coyotes 9-11pm -  Explore Coyote fact and fiction on a moonlight hike with a Park Ranger. Maybe even see & hear of our canine neighbors. Bring layered clothing, hiking shoes & a flashlight.  Call (408) 225-0225 for information. Moderate hike.
  • Saturday 8/21: Santa Teresa’s Historic Bernal Ranch:  Zorro Movie Night & History Hike 7:30-9:30pm – Explore the exiting history of Rancho Santa Teresa on an evening hike, followed by the romantic Zorro movie which depicts the same period of history.  reservation required, call (408) 226-5453.  Easy hike.
  • 8/14: Santa Teresa’s Historic Bernal Ranch:  Wash Day & Old Time Games 1-4:30pm.
  • Parking fees at all county parks that charge fees (including the Pueblo Area at Santa Teresa) have gone up to $5. The annual pass is $65. See the notice here. See here for all County Parks fees.
  • The May meeting of the Friends of Santa Teresa Park was a special neighborhood forum to discuss issues concerning neighborhood access to the park in and around the Mounted Ranger Unit. The June meeting was a follow-up. Here are some pictures and discussions of the trails and conditions around the Norred Ranch/Mounted Ranger Unit area.   • Members of the Friends of Santa Teresa Park participated in the trail work and dedication of the new trails in Rancho Canada Del Oro at Calero County Park on 4/24/04.
  • Members of the Friends of Santa Teresa Park participated in the dedication of the Wood Road Trail at Almaden Quicksilver on 4/17/04.
  • Volunteer trail work crews worked on the Rocky Ridge Trail on 4/10/04.
  • Members of the Friends of Santa Teresa Park took a field trip to visit the restored ranch house at Joseph D. Grant County Park on 3/6/04 to hear about the history of the ranch and see the results of the restoration efforts there.
  • The Volunteers Awards Dinner was held at the Santa Teresa Golf Course Upper Clubhouse on 4/1/04. See here for a list of the awards.

  • Oct. 10/11: "An Evening of Lunacy" 7:30-9:30 pm at the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch, classic wolfman movie and moon-viewing with telescopes.
  • Sept 27: Open House at the Mounted Ranger Unit at the Buck Norred Ranch site on Brockenhurst Drive and Heaton Moor Drive from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.

  • August 29: "Movie Nite and Planet Hike" See a sci-fi movie while munching popcorn and drinking lemonade. Meet at the Bernal Ranch at 7:30 pm. After the movie, there will be a night hike for stargazing and viewing Mars. Call 226-5453 for reservations.
  • Sept 13: 10 am to 12 noon, Nature with Bikes, "Do you ever wonder what you're riding amongst as you ride through the park? Join the Ranger on a moderately strenuous ride through Santa Teresa County Park to find out the answers." Meet at lower parking lot. Bring bicycle, helment, riding safety equipment, water, sunscreen, and a snack.
  • August 2, 7:30 to 10 pm: Stairway to Heaven stargazing hike. Meet in front of the Bernal Ranch House. Reservations required. Call (408) 226-5453. 
  • July 26, 7 to 9:30 am: nature photography and history hike. "Trek through the park with profesional photographer Scott Hinrichs, and capture wildlife on film. A park historian will also tell tales of the Bernal ranch site. Discussion topics include nature photography techniques and equipment, types of file and other light-sensitive media, creative composition and other shutterbug tips." Meet in front of the Bernal Ranch House. Reservations required. $5 donation requested. Call (408) 226-5453. 
  • On July 11, at their annual meeting in Milwaukee Wisconsin, the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials (NACPRO) honored the county parks department with an "Operational Facility" Award for the outstanding development of the Bernal-Gulnac Joice Historic Area.
  • Summer 2003 hours for the the Santa Teresa Park Historic Area (Bernal Gulnac Joice Ranch) ranch house and barn: Fridays 10 am to 4 pm, Saturdays 12 to 6 pm, Sundays 10 am to 4 pm. Additional times available by appointment. Call (408) 226-5453.
  • Wash days are held at the Bernal Ranch on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 1 to 5 pm. Visitors can use old-fashioned washing equipment to wash clothes, then play old-time games. See the Girl Scout Tour for pictures of this activity.
  • The Coyote Crest 4H club takes care of the garden and chickens at the Bernal Ranch. For more information, contact the Santa Clara County 4-H office at (408) 299-2638 ext. 1013. See page 2 of the March 2003 4H newsletter for a garden report.
  • The County Parks Volunteers Awards Dinner was held on June 5 at the Santa Teresa Golf Club Banquet Facility (instead of the regular FOSTP meeting). This was a good year for the Friends of Santa Teresa Park. Volunteers took home a number of awards and FOSTP won volunteer group of the year

  • Rick Leonard will lead Stairway to Heaven Hike at 7:30 pm on June 28, meet at Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch on Manila Drive, call (408) 226-5453 for reservations.
  • The County Parks Volunteer Recognition Dinner will be held on June 5 at 6:30 in the Santa Teresa Golf Club banquet facility instead of the regular Friends of Santa Teresa Park meeting. RSVP to Beeny Sander at (408) 355-2254 by May 26.
  • "Which Animal is That?" Park rangers will lead a 1-mile hike to discover tools and clues for tracking wildlife. The hike is on May 24, 2003, 10 am - noon, starting at the Pueblo Area by the call box. Call 408-225-0225 for reservations.
  • California Trail Days was held on April 26, 2003 at Santa Teresa, Almaden Quicksilver, and Stevens Creek County Parks. The site at Santa Teresa was the Ohlone Trail starting at the archery range. See here for pictures from that event.

  • The dedication of the Joice-Bernal Ranch (now officially called the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch) and Santa Teresa Springs on Manila Drive at Camino Verde was held on June 29, 2002 from 11 am to 1 pm. There were farm displays, wagon rides, guided tours, a petting zoo, horses, history talks, a blacksmith demonstation, food, drinks, and more.   • Santa Teresa Park had a spectacular display of wildflowers this spring. See here for pictures of the spring 2002 wildflowers from all over the park.
  • One of the most popular trails in the park, the Hidden Springs/Coyote Peak Trail from the Pueblo parking area to Coyote Peak, has been repaired. The trail was deeply eroded by last year's rains. The ruts have been filled in. (Alternate routes to reach Coyote Peak are the Rocky Ridge Trail or the Boundary Line Trail.)
  • The entrance to the Buck Norred Ranch at Brockenhurst and Heaton Moor has been re-opened. Construction of the mounted ranger station at the ranchsite is nearly complete.

  • The Friends of Santa Teresa Park made a presentation at a community meeting sponsored by the Santa Teresa Citizens Action Group: Tuesday October 23 (re-scheduled from October 2), 7:00 pm, Martin Murphy Middle School Gymnasium, 141 Avenida Espana, San Jose. We showed displays on the park and the Website. Mike Boulland talked about the Pyzak property. Ron Horii talked about the Website and the parking fees.
